Mission News: Volunteer Recognition Dinner

Volunteer Recognition Dinner 2013

Anne Frank said, "How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world!"  On January 27, Rev. Tim and Nina Moseley and the staff  at Wayside Christian Mission honored those selfless volunteers who improve the lives of the homeless during our 2013 Volunteer Recognition Dinner.  The Rev. Richard Anderson who, as a young seminarian, founded the Mission back in 1957, delivered an inspiring message of faith, hope, and encouragement.  During his address, he spoke of the ministry's humble beginnings while marveling at the size and scope of today's Wayside Christian Mission.  The University of Louisville's Dr. Edna Ross, whose efforts have given birth to many innovative ideas, received our Rescuer of the Year Award.  Thanks to her influence, seven of the university's colleges are now involved directly with Wayside Christian Mission.  Rev. Tim and Nina Moseley gave their State of the Mission address which covered a number of relevant topics and the music was provided by the Down By The Wayside Choir.  Are you a volunteer?  If so, thank you!  If not, please consider becoming a volunteer!  Consider yourself invited to our Tuesday evening volunteer orientation held at 6 PM or our Saturday morning volunteer orientation at 10 AM.  Both sessions are held at Hotel Louisville at 120 West Broadway.  Please remember that the  job of caring for the homeless is much too big for us alone!

Mission News: Sullivan University Launches Exciting New Educational Program at Wayside

Sullivan University Launches

Exciting New Educational Program at Wayside

Many thanks to Sullivan University's Angela Riggs, Dean of Early Childhood Education, for her hard work and leadership in launching the first of a new series of educational workshops at Wayside Christian Mission's Hotel Louisville!  These two hour parenting/early childhood educational sessions will include such topics as Storytelling and Literacy, Child Abuse and Neglect, Guidance Techniques, Toilet Training, and Recognizing Childhood Illnesses.  The first session, Everyday Math with Kids, had our parents engaged in a number of hands-on activities that will allow them to better assist their children with math homework.  By all counts, this first of these many parenting/early childhood educational sessions was a huge success!  The number of parents in attendance and the degree of their participation was most encouraging!  Again, we offer our sincerest gratitude to Angela Riggs and Sullivan University!  Thank you for helping those who are in our care!

Mission News: KENT SCHOOL ALUMNI COUNCIL SERVES HOPE AND ENCOURAGEMENT

KENT SCHOOL ALUMNI COUNCIL

SERVES HOPE AND ENCOURAGEMENT

"Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club I would rather not belong to."

--Gilda Radner

In 2007, a new affiliate of Gilda's Club, a national organization that provides support for cancer victims, opened its doors in Louisville.  Today, there are over twenty Gilda's Clubs in North America offering hope and encouragement to those stricken with cancer. As part of an annual community service project, the Kent School Alumni Council hosted a meal at Gilda's Club for about seventy family members and friends of those who were lost to cancer.  With assistance from Hotel Louisville's Chef Kevin, Kent School Alumni Council members prepared a deliciously appetizing evening breakfast with offerings that included breakfast pizza, eggs, French toast, hash browns, biscuits, sausage and bacon.  Participants reported that Dean Singer proved his culinary prowess as hungry guests queued up for an expertly prepared meal.  Cancer is a ruthless enemy that shows no mercy, but thanks to Gilda's Club and the Kent School Alumni Council hope and encouragement were also on the menu!

Beth Wanted to Share Her Story

Beth's Story

A year ago, Beth and her daughter Lilly were residents of Wayside Christian Mission.  Today, Beth and Lilly live in their own home and their future prospects are certainly promising!  Beth is grateful to Wayside and, of course, to the donors and volunteers who are vital to our work. "Being at Wayside gave me the chance to focus on getting my life together.  They helped me to get into college.  I am still a college student and in my own house.  After meeting many of the people during my stay, I decided to be an Art Therapist.  I want to help those that aren't quite able to express their emotions verbally."  What a noble ambition, Beth, and we are all rooting for you and, of course, your adorable daughter Lilly!  If you are a volunteer or a donor or both, you are an integral part of Beth's success story!  We are very proud of Beth and the volunteers and donors who play such a vital role in our life-saving ministry!
