Mission Update: Meet the University of Louisville's Tonia Thomas!

Meet the University of Louisville's Tonia Thomas!

It is no idle boast when the University of Louisville says, "It's happening here!"  The University of Louisville's School of Medicine is an integral part of a large and growing Health Sciences Center that includes more than 200,000 square feet of state-of-the-art research space, a comprehensive standardized patient clinic and one of the largest academic medical simulation centers in the nation.  One of the reasons for the ongoing success of the University of Louisville's Health Science Center is its people.  A case in point is Tonia Thomas.  Tonia Thomas, Program Director of the Post bac Pre-med Certificate Program, is a Wayside Christian Mission volunteer!  Recently, she recruited four students to join her for some grungy volunteer work at the Mission's Transitional Living Shelter on West Broadway! In spite of the hard work, her crew seemed to be having a good time!   Tonia Thomas is just one of many University of Louisville staff and faculty members who, along with a legion of students, are actively engaged in the work of the Wayside Christian Mission!   We are grateful to our friends from the University of Louisville for caring about our homeless neighbors!

Mission Update - Sound Sends Shivers Up Saintly Spines!

Second Samuel Sanctified's Sonic

Sound Sends Shivers Up Saintly Spines!

At the age of sixty, Sam Wilkins may be one of Southern Seminary's more mature students, but do not equate maturity with run down and spent--for Sam's music and preaching are 93 octane all the way!  Accompanied by his quartet, Second Samuel Sanctified, the women and men in our early recovery program were treated to an electrifying service charged with high energy music and preaching that could make the dead sit up and take notice!  Sam sings and plays keyboards; Malcolm Gore sings and plays a lean, mean guitar.  Otis Mitchell drives the rhythm with his dizzying drums and Ron Thompson wows the audience with his tenor sax!  Who knew Gospel music could be so much fun?  Thanks, guys!

Trinity Chapel Kids Lend a Hand

Trinity Chapel Kids Lend a Hand to the Homeless

An aging poet once pondered, "Why is youth wasted on young people?"  Ah, but when youth's vitality, creativity, and energy are directed for good, amazing things can happen!  A case in point is a recent visit by Pastor Beau Henderson's youth group from Trinity Chapel Assembly of God in east Louisville.  Pastor Beau's kids arrived at Wayside Christian Mission's family shelter eager to learn about homelessness and ready to serve the families in our care!  Here is what some of the kids had so say about their visit to the Mission:

"I've enjoyed it...this is the kind of ministry I want work at!  Doing all of this (volunteer) work makes me realize how much I take for granted and how much I have been blessed." --Rachel

"It reminds me that other people are out there doing work for God...there are people sacrificing because of their love."--Jeff

"Helping people makes people happy!"--Paige

"I was blessed in my time here helping out!"--Katherine

"It's been great!"--Emily

When asked about the volunteer activities' impact on his kids, Pastor Beau responded, "Serving at Wayside was a great reminder for our students and myself that God's work is being done all through this city, not just in 'our own little corner of it.'  It was a blessing to be here today, may God be glorified!  Thank you, Jesus!"
